Access for Families of All Income Levels

To maintain economic diversity and deepen our public mission:

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can apply to Miss Major Middle?

MMM is open to any family in NYC. We prioritize outreach to families in Community School District 13, but all NYC families are welcome to apply. We do not screen based on academic performance, behavior, gender identity, sexual orientation, or family profile.

Is there tuition? What does it cost?

Miss Major Middle is completely tuition-free. We are a community-funded, public-access school. There is no cost to families.

What grades are you enrolling?

For Fall 2027, we are enrolling students entering 6th and 7th grades. By Fall 2028, we will serve grades 6-8.

Is MMM a charter school?

No. Miss Major Middle is not a charter school and not a private school. We are a community-funded, public-access school operating through a homeschool partnership with NYC Public Schools.

How does the lottery work?

All applications submitted by the deadline are entered into a random drawing. Selections are made without regard to academic performance, behavior, or any other criteria. 50% of seats are reserved for students from economically disadvantaged families.

What if we're not selected in the lottery?

Applicants not selected are placed on a waitlist in lottery order. As spots become available, families are contacted from the waitlist.

Do you have to be LGBTQ+ to attend?

No. MMM welcomes all families who want a genderful, creative, relational approach to middle school—regardless of identity or background. We are built for kids and families connected to the LGBTQ+ community, and for anyone who shares our values.

What is the homeschool partnership?

The homeschool partnership is a legal structure that allows MMM to operate as a tuition-free, community-funded school. It is NOT a signal that attendance is optional or that families teach at home. Your child's education happens at school, with our teachers, following our curriculum. The only difference from a traditional public school is who signs the paperwork—and we guide you through every step.

Is MMM a full-time school?

Yes. MMM is a full-day program, five days a week, in our school building, with a complete academic curriculum. Our calendar is similarly aligned with NYC Public Schools, but with slightly longer breaks during the traditional school year. To complement these breaks, we offer two 3-week summer terms—families choose one. This creates our 180-day school year. The experience for families is the same as any public, private, or charter school.

What paperwork is required for families?

MMM prepares all required homeschool documentation (IHIPs, quarterly reports, annual assessments). Families simply review and submit these documents to NYC Public Schools by stated deadlines. We guide you through every step of this process.

What does MMM expect from families?

We ask families to ensure daily attendance, support full participation in academics and arts, communicate with teachers, attend family conferences, and submit required documentation by deadlines. This partnership between school and family is the foundation of everything we do.
